NOAA Weather Balloon found on South Second Street

On Friday February 5, 2016 at 9:30 am our Electric Light Crew retrieved a NOAA weather balloon which was entangled in our electric lines at 220 S. Second Street. The orange parachute, instrument package, balloon portion and return mailer were taken to the St. Clair Area School to be shown to the children as an educational tool. The weather balloon was released from Sterling, Virginia on February 5, 2016 at 6:00 am.

Weather balloons are launched around the world to gather data on current condition and to provide forecasters and computer models information for weather forecasting. The National Weather Service recovers less than 20 percent of the 75,000 instrument packages released each year.
